Enrol a newborn in Medicare

You need to enrol your newborn baby in Medicare as soon as possible. A newborn is a child aged up to 52 weeks or up to their first birthday.

  1. Sign in to myGov

    Visit my.gov.au and sign in using your username and password or Digital ID.

  2. Select 'Medicare'

    Select Medicare from the Linked services.

  3. Select 'Services' then 'Enrol a newborn'

    Select Services from the top navigation menu, then select Enrol a newborn from the drop-down menu.

  4. Supporting documentation

    To enrol your baby in Medicare make sure you have supporting documentation before you start.

    You will need:

    • proof of birth documents such as a certified copy of a birth certificate or birth extract.
    • a copy of adoption, guardianship, surrogacy or parental relationship.
  5. Follow the prompts

    Follow the prompts to complete the enrolment.
