Building a safer, secure, and more connected health system

The Agency has a responsibility to provide leadership and stewardship of digital health standards across Australia by providing the vision, framework for governance, and co-ordination for all contributors.

About the Standards Framework

The National Framework for Digital Health Standards sets out a unified, nationally coordinated approach to the adoption, implementation and development of digital health standards. It strengthens collaboration across governments, healthcare providers, industry, technology vendors, Standards Development Organisations (SDOs), and peak bodies.

The Framework underpins a national program of work led by the Agency to ensure consistent use of standards enabling safe, timely and accurate sharing of health information across the system.

Why standards matter

Digital health standards provide the technical foundation for:

  • Secure and reliable information sharing
  • Improved coordination between healthcare providers
  • Better continuity of care for consumers
  • Scalable, future-ready digital health services

  • Strengthening evidence and benefits
  • Training, education and workforce development
  • Communication, collaboration and engagement
  • Implementation support

The Agency is working in partnership with Standards Development Organisations (SDOs) to ensure each standard is well represented and to demonstrate how they work together to support a connected, digitally enabled health system.

Consultation is open from 10 November 2025 to 9 January 2026.
