Health Connect Australia Provider Directory
The Health Connect Australia Provider Directory (the Provider Directory) is a trusted source of healthcare provider information, including healthcare organisations, practitioners and service information, to support secure provider-to-provider communication across the health system.
About
The Provider Directory is a national digital service designed to support secure interactions between healthcare providers across the health system. It brings together information about healthcare professionals, healthcare organisations, the services they deliver and where they deliver them. This information is sourced from multiple existing systems and made available through a single, easy‑to‑access national directory.
By improving visibility of healthcare providers and their available services, the Provider Directory helps improve access to healthcare and contributes to better outcomes for patients.
Why it matters for healthcare providers
Today, information about healthcare providers is stored in many different places. Sometimes the information is missing, out of date, or hard to find. The Provider Directory will bring provider information together in one trusted place. This will make it easier for healthcare providers to find each other, connect with services, and share information safely.
Who can access the Provider Directory
The Provider Directory is not publicly available. Information can only be accessed by authorised entities, including healthcare providers, healthcare provider organisations, healthcare administration entities, and contracted service providers acting on behalf of healthcare providers. Access is restricted to entities authorised under the Healthcare Identifiers Act 2010 and is subject to legislative, privacy and security requirements.
The Provider Directory and other national directory services
The Provider Directory is part of a larger national digital health ecosystem that helps manage information about healthcare services and providers in Australia.
Together, these services reduce repeated work, improve data quality, and create a connected, reliable, and future-ready national directory system.
- Healthcare Identifiers (HI) Service
Australia's national system that uses unique numbers to match patients, healthcare providers and organisations accurately.
- Provider Connect Australia (PCA)
PCA allows healthcare organisations to maintain their business and service details in a single location and share that information across participating directories, including the NHSD and the Provider Directory, helping to ensure information remains accurate, consistent, and up to date.
- National Health Services Directory (NHSD)
NHSD is a public-facing health services directory. It helps people find and access local health services, like doctors, hospitals, and clinics. This enables consumers to make appropriate choices when seeking these services.
- Health Connect Australia Provider Directory (the Provider Directory)
This is a secure directory used only by authorised healthcare providers, healthcare administration entities and digital health systems. It supports clinical work, such as referrals, prescribing and information sharing.
