Australian Organ Donation Register

Could you be the reason someone else gets a second chance at life?

Reflecting on DonateLife Week which concluded on 3 August, we're spotlighting the importance of registering your intent to be an organ or tissue donor on the Australian Organ Donation Register (AODR).

Even though about 80% of Australians say they support organ donation, only 36% are registered on the AODR.

And with more than 1,800 people on the organ waitlist and 14,000 more on dialysis for kidney failure, it's more important than ever to start a conversation about organ and tissue donation.

One organ donor can save the lives of up to 7 people and change the lives of many more through eye and tissue donation.

Your organ donation status, if you have consented to it being uploaded to My Health Record, is just one piece of the important health information stored within your digital health record. It can also be viewed through the my health app.

Your family will always be asked to support your decision before organ donation goes ahead. They are much more likely to agree if they know you want to be a donor.

The National Centre for Indigenous Genomics

August 9 is International Day of the World's Indigenous People and we're spotlighting the work of Associate Professor Azure Hermes and her colleagues at the ANU NCIG (National Centre for Indigenous Genomics).

Associate Professor Hermes visited the Agency as part of its Reconciliation Week observance to share insights into how the work of the ANU NCIG is harnessing the science of DNA to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The work undertaken at the ANU NCIG aims to improve access to, and knowledge of, genetic conditions, genetic testing and genomics research among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This work is supported by a suite of culturally grounded resources including storytelling through animation, plain language definitions, interviews and maps that reflect community voice, values and knowledge.

'We've been working with Aboriginal communities for the last 10 years, and in that time we've seen a steady increase in the number of First Nations people being referred to or wanting to access genetic and genomic health services,' said NCIG Deputy Director, Associate Professor Azure Hermes (NCIG: 13 May 2025).

'But many community members have told us there are no culturally appropriate resources that explain what these services are, how they can help, or what to expect.'

Engagement with the Medical Software Industry Association

On Friday 25 July 2025, the Medical Software Industry Association (MSIA) held its members' event in Brisbane. This event centres on the software vendor industry and consisted of updates on different parts of the digital health ecosystem, including legislative policy, cybersecurity, economics in healthcare and new and upcoming programs of work.

Agency Board member and Australian Medical Association (AMA) President, Dr Danielle McMullen was a key speaker on the day, along with the Queensland Minister for Customer Services and Open Data and Minister for Small and Family Business, and presenters from the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, Services Australia, the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and others.

On the day before the Summit, the Agency led two workshops focused on issues of keen interest to MSIA members. The first was on the Electronic Prescribing Conformance Profile 4.0 focusing on the draft conformance requirements for connecting systems, including General Prescribing, Medication Chart Prescribing and Dispensing Systems. This was led by Vicki Ibrahim, Ashleigh Ramos, Hayley Smilie, Kavya Ramaiah along with Jenene Baker from the Department. The second workshop focused on the scope, phased implementation, and architectural strategy of the Health Connect Australia program and was led by Peter O'Halloran, Sandra Cook, Ryan Mavin, Timothy Panoho, Nicole Gartrell and Ricardo Inacio.

The events showcased the power of collaboration in building a more connected, secure and patient-centred digital health system for all Australians. Thank you to the software industry vendors who participated and whose insights and engagement are helping shape the future of digital health in Australia.
